Other Sports Art
The Oxford Dictionary defines sport as … “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or a team competes against another or others for entertainment”.
Having a deep-seated interest in painting ‘people in sports’ I had this desire to depict every major sport over time – but that was fifty years ago and without research into how many we might be talking about. The favourites roll off easily … football (soccer), cricket, rugby, athletics, cycling, horses, golf, tennis and sailing etc … but meandering on and into say basketball, boxing, luge, archery, martial-arts, skating, bowling, fencing, speedskating, sumo, badminton, skateboarding, hockey and weightlifting … well, doesn’t even scratch the surface. Every last one of them however magically creates emotive excitement – and for me displays the ’colour of movement’.
