Football Nostalgia Prints
Chix Bubblegum Football Cards … purchased on the way to school from Dixon’s sweetshop, were impressive tall illustrated or photographic image cards, packaged with an equal size sheet of rigid pink toxic bubblegum. This was chewed into submission to the size of a ‘pink flavoured’ golf ball. Even after diligent swapping, an unhealthy amount of golf balls were masticated till either Ivor Broadis or Albert Quixall materialised to complete the set.
The magic day in every month seemed an eternities wait until the ‘Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly’ magazine fell through the letterbox – apart from an abundance of action photographs, it revealed our idols also travelled to matches on the local bus with fans and chain-smoked in the after-match communal bath. Along with the Christmas Annual, it was – and still remains – the king of sports publications.
